The Break
Theme: The moment things changed
I still replay that afternoon as if it ends differently. There wasn’t a fight. Just something said too plainly, or maybe not plainly enough. I remember the way your voice shifted—how quickly we stopped understanding each other.
I didn’t know it was the last conversation we would have. I might have stayed on the phone longer or asked a better question. Or listened in a way that felt different to you. Instead, we hung up like we always did. And everything after that became something else.
Trying to Understand
Theme: Self-questioning
I have rewritten your childhood so many times.
In some versions, I am more patient. In others, I notice things sooner. Sometimes I say less. Sometimes I say more.
I look for the moment I missed—the one that would explain all of this.
But the truth is, I can’t find a single moment. Just a series of small ones, none of which seemed important at the time. I don’t know if that makes it harder or easier to live with.
What Cannot Be Said
Theme: What remains unsaid (including anger)
There are things I would say to you if I believed you could hear them. Not all of them are kind.
Some of them are sharp with anger—years of questions with no place to land. I would ask you how it became so easy to leave. I would ask you why I was not worth a harder conversation.
And I would want to take it all back. Because beneath the anger is something I don’t know how to say without it sounding smaller than it is. I miss you. Both things are true.
Living With Distance
Theme: The weight of ordinary days
It’s not the big days that surprise me after so many years.
I expect to struggle through the holidays.
It's the ordinary moments of any day that throw me still.
At the grocery store, reaching for something I know you’d like and catching myself. Hearing a joke and turning, as if you were still beside me to laugh.
These small moments hurt big.
They arrive without warning, bringing bitter sweetness that lingers.
Finding New Ground
Theme: Reclaiming self
There was a time when I didn’t recognize my own life.
Everything felt organized around what was missing.
Lately, something quieter has been taking shape.
I go for walks without thinking about what I should have said. I make plans that don’t depend on whether you’ll be there. I notice that I can still feel something like steadiness.
It’s not the life I imagined. But it is a life. And I am still here in it.
Living Without Resolution
Theme: Making room for anger without being defined by it
I used to think the anger meant I wasn’t ready to accept things.
That if I were further along it would be gone by now.
But it hasn’t disappeared. It has changed.
It no longer feels like something I need to act on. It doesn’t ask me to fix anything. It exists alongside everything else. I can feel it and still go about my day, still care about other things.
It is no longer the whole story.
Just one part of it.
Radical Acceptance & Gifts of Estrangement
Theme: Unexpected forms of connection
I didn’t expect to find comfort in people who don’t know you.
Or people who know this version of me instead.
There are conversations now that don’t circle back to what’s missing. There are moments that feel complete on their own. I notice the way someone listens. The way a friend remembers something small about me. The way a stranger can be unexpectedly kind. These are not replacements. They are something else.
And slowly, I am learning to recognize them as enough.
lnspiration & Encouraging Others
Theme: Turning toward life
There was a time when everything felt like waiting.
Waiting for a message. Waiting for an explanation. Waiting for something to change.
I don’t wait in the same way anymore. I still think of you, but it no longer stops everything else from moving.
I make plans. I look ahead without needing to know if you are part of what’s coming.
It feels unfamiliar, sometimes.
But it also feels like something opening.
Not instead of you. Just… forward.
